Ochieng Hannington is Currently a lecturer affiliated with the Department of Biology, Faculty of Science and Education, Nagongera campus, Busitema University. He holds a PhD in Environment and Natural Resources from Makerere University, Uganda; MSc in Environmental Science (Limnology and Wetland Ecosystems) from UNESCO-IHE- Institute for Water Education, Delft, The Netherlands; and a Bachelor of Biomedical Laboratory Technology, BBLT (Hons) from Makerere University, Uganda.
He has attended a number of local, regional, and international short-term trainings including; Advanced data analysis, Chironomus SPP. (Insecta: Chironomidae) larval deformity analysis, Statistical data analysis using SPSS and STATA; ArcGIS 9.x and GPS applications; a multidisciplinary course in Tropical Freshwater Ecosystems Management; Microsoft Windows 98 & Office 2000 (Word processing, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint); and Freshwater invertebrates (collection, identification, preparation & taxonomy).
He started working as a laboratory assistant in 1992, and through the ranks, he was a senior laboratory technician/head of water quality studies by 2009, at the present National Fisheries Resources Research Institute, Jinja. He worked as a part-time lecturer in the Department of Environmental and Biological Science at the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU), Mbale, Uganda (2008-2010). Ochieng was appointed and started working as the Chief Technician for the Department of Biology, Faculty of Science and Education, Busitema University, Tororo, on August 01, 2009. He was re-designated from Chief Technician to a Lecturer position for the same Department of Busitema University . Ochieng contributes to the teaching, examination, and supervision of students on research, program development, outreach, and research at the Faculty of Science and Education, Busitema University, Tororo.
Ochieng’s research interest is geared toward monitoring and developing a holistic strategy for protecting the freshwater ecosystems of Uganda and East Africa. In order to do that, he and his fellow scientists are developing the rigorous monitoring and data collection procedures needed to generate accurate information on the status and health of the ecosystems. Ochieng has worked on major lakes and some rivers in Uganda from the late 1990s to date, with publications. He has participated and contributed as a water quality/bio-assessment specialist to various Environmental and Social Impact Assessments for developmental projects within Ugandan river and lake basins, e.g., the proposed mini-hydropower stations within River Siti in Bukwo, Lhubiriha and Nyamgasani in Kasese, and others (from 2003 to date). He has won research awards and grants from organisations such as Busitema University Research and Innovation Fund 2022/2023, National Geographic Society research collaboration grants 2018 & 2021/2022, Makerere University Research and Innovation Fund 2019/2020, and UNESCO-IHE Fellowship Trust Fund 2005/2006.
